In Organised Simplicity, Tsh describes simple living as “living your life with a purpose that aligns with your values…being who you were made to be.”
I love this definition because it leaves room for each of us to make those decisions for our own family without feeling like we have to limit ourselves to 100 personal possessions or spend so many hours per week doing x, y or z. Here are few simple steps to define hassle free living for your family :
- Choose the Best & Leave the Rest – Recognise your power to make choices about how you live and start practicing in all areas of your life. What gets to be in your home? How do you want to spend your money? What activities are important to you?
- Understand the Cost of your Choices – Every time you say Yes to one thing, you say No to another thing (this is called Opportunity Costs). Your choice to take your kids out for the day might means Yes to adventure and community. It might mean you are saying No to getting chores done.
- Say No to the Good & Yes to the Great – Take the time to sit and ask what is important to you to say Yes to. Set your values and priorities to use as guides in making these little daily and big life decisions in how you use your resources and time as a family
- Own It – What is important in your family might never match up with another family. For most of us, we spent a lifetime merging with the values and interests of others. Now it is your time to own what your own values, priorities and interests are.
- It is the Long Game – Living a simple life that is in line with your values and priorities will take practice. You will make mistakes, it will be messy. Remember this is the long game of making little decisions that all build up into the life you want.
