Refocus Your Mind

A study published in the journal Science revealed how distracted most of us are, and the price we pay for it. The research, done at Harvard University, found that people in the study were thinking about something other than what they were doing a whopping 47% of the time!

How much of the time do you spend living in the present moment? An endless stream of thoughts flows through our minds. And if your mind is wandering right now — come on back and wrap your mind around this: Trying to develop better focus is a more important goal than you might think. Here are few things which might help :

  • Physical Activity – By being physically active, your release a stream of feel good chemicals. Sometimes, you may find yourself thinking about work or work tasks but by these occurring during physical activity, they will come at a different pace and from a new perspective.
  • Building Bricks & Jigsaws – By being tactile and following simple but focused instructions, you can enhance your sense of wellbeing, your minds are focused on the present, giving it a break from thoughts about work and other things.
  • Art & Music – When you are music making or creating a piece of art, your mind needs to focus on the art form you are creating. This focus can free your mind and allow you to let go of work related thoughts and stress.
  • Meditation & Mindfulness – Mindfulness jumps in the way of all these distractions of the mind and says “Hey, come back to the present moment, get what needs to be done, done!”. Try any kind of meditation or mindfulness activity that you would like.

Thanks Chevvy. A focused mind enables you to carry out everything faster, more efficiently, and with fewer mistakes. When you focus on your actions, you carry out what you are doing more efficiently and with fewer mistakes, and you enjoy what you are doing.

Yup that is mindfulness. Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future.

Your mind has to concentrate in order to sort out the different colours that form a picture. The more pieces there are, the more your brain has to work. Hence forcing it to think harder than it normally does. Solving jigsaw puzzles every day can help you improve your concentration a lot.

Thank you for this. With classes being online, these days it is hard to focus on studies and even more difficult to stop procrastinating. I am thinking of trying meditation but I can’t seem to find the right app.
    A really helpful post:)
