How to Take Oral Supplements

First off, any kind of oral nutritional supplements should have been advised by your healthcare professional. They will be prescribed by your GP and should be taken as prescribed like any other medicines. Supplements are generally prescribed for 4 weeks at a time. If your supplements have been put on a repeat prescription for a number of months, you will need to contact your healthcare professional at the end of this time to see if you still need them.

Here are a few suggestions for taking oral supplements :

  • As they are intended to be taken in addition to your diet try to take them between meals so that they do not reduce your appetite for food
  • Sweet flavours taste better when they are chilled
  • Chocolate and coffee flavours can be warmed to make a hot drink (donot boil)
  • Fruit juice type drinks can be diluted with soda or tonic water if they aretoo sweet
  • Supplements can be frozen to make lollies
  • Request the specific flavours you prefer
  • Supplements can be poured from the bottle into a glass or cup
  • If you find the supplements are too sweet, try savoury flavours, neutralflavour or yogurt style (discuss with your GP or dietitian)
  • Keep opened bottles in the fridge and throw out any supplement left inan opened bottle after 24 hours
  • Some supplements can be added to foods. Recipe books are available– ask your dietitian for more information

What do you think about the importance of zinc as a supplement? It’s impact on the mood especially if one is in traning?

It works. Zinc increased the amount of the brain fertilizer BDNF in the hippocampus and reduced rat fighting behavior. In humans, zinc has been found to be low in the serum of those suffering from depression. In fact, the more depressed someone is, the lower the zinc level. A recent Japanese study found that daily zinc supplements improved mood and reduced measures of anger in young women. Studies show that supplementing with 7 mg to 30 mg of zinc a day is safe and effective at boosting mood, but taking more than these amounts is not recommended.
