If you are overeating, there is a reason. And it’s not that you are undisciplined, lazy, or lacking willpower. Something is driving your overeating–and guess what? Your odds of being effective and successful go WAY up when you identify how to directly address what that something is. When you don’t address the reasons you overeat, not only are your weight loss plans likely to fail, you are likely to continue overeating and gain more weight. When you are smart and strategic, you can break the cycle. And you can get started in just seven days.

Here are a few practical ways to overcome overeating :

  • Remember that you can have more food later.
  • Remove the fear around not having enough food.
  • Let go of the mentality that the “Diet starts on Monday”
  • Forgive yourself. It is okay to overeat sometimes.
  • Plan you meals ahead of time.
  • Enjoy a late snack.
  • Avoid sugar and coffee in the afternoon.
  • Sleep longer.
  • Nurture yourself in other ways besides food.
  • Give yourself permission to enjoy all the foods you love.

There is a way to end struggles with overeating and emotional eating so you can lose weight. It may surprise you that the key, in most cases, is not working harder. It’s learning to apply the tools, tips and strategies that allow you to work smarter and to approach your unique situation with more confidence and ease. Making changes that last requires getting to the root of overeating understanding what’s driving the urge to overeat and addressing that issue so that food loses its power.

  1. Very much required. We actually think that we will not be able to get that particular food later so we hog on a lot which hurts us later and we feel guilty. 😁 Thank you for the article. 👍

    1. Hahahha yes Kritika. Research however shows very grave side of overeating. Researchers found that overeating impairs the ability of brain insulin to suppress the breakdown of fat in adipose tissue. New research from Mount Sinai School of Medicine sheds light on how overeating can cause a malfunction in brain insulin signaling, and lead to obesity and diabetes. Thank you for stopping by and liking the post.

  3. I tend to experiment(i’m now) with myriad dishes when I’m visiting a new place. I’m sure, most of us do. But, deep down I think of the workout ahead and make my mind to shed those extra pounds gained previously 🙂 . This topic is underrated. I’ve seen people binge eating and then let’s kick start on Monday or the next year etc.

    1. We all do experiment with new cuisines Manohar. Our own country has much to offer in terms of food. Also the reason why I wrote this was because of impending new year. People around me have already started making their new year resolutions about weight loss..like last year…hahah…!!! Overeating affects our energy, weakens our core, these things should not be ignored.

      1. True that Garima. Most resolutions end up before, start. One doesn’t need the right time, to get things in place 🙂

  9. Great post. If we’re going to maintain control of our eating we definitely need to look beneath the surface and try to understand what is driving the behaviour. It might be different reasons at different times – but it’s important to identify patterns.

    1. Yes. It is very important to look at the underlying triggers to our eating habits. Compulsive overeating is a form of disordered eating, which means that a combination of genetics, psychological issues and sociocultural factors generally contribute to the cause of this behavior.

    1. Yes. The occasional oversized meal or snack will not cause too much harm, but, over time, overeating can lead to serious health conditions. These include type 2 diabetes, heart and blood vessel conditions, and obesity, which can lead to metabolic syndrome.

    1. I am glad you liked it Chiru. Our Indian diets are rich in carbohydrates and fats which delays satiety and hence overeating. We all are guilty of it.

  12. I emotionally overeat. I know it; yet I’m unable to break the cycle. I’m sad about something – I’ll eat unhealthy/ overeat – I’ll feel guilty about overeating – I’ll become sad. & the cycle will continue till my mood improves on its own.

I’m glad I read this post. Will repeat the points you’ve mentioned to myself. Hopefully it’ll help. Thank you!
