The Best Type of Mentors

A mentor is a person or friend who guides a less experienced person by building trust and modeling positive behaviors. An effective mentor understands that his or her role is to be dependable, engaged, authentic, and tuned into the needs of the mentee.

There are primarily 5 types of mentors that have been identified :

  • Jedi Master – This is the mentor who has garnered their wisdom from years of experience. They take the time to sit down with their mentees and share their knowledge with those who are eager to learn.
  • Campaign Manager – This mentor speaks on your behalf to open doors for you, whether its a new business opportunity or career advancement. This mentor connects you to new opportunities and acts as a reference for you.
  • Sounding Board – A mentor who acts as your sounding board provides the psychological lift you might need when you meet challenges on your way to achieving goals, problems.
  • Mirror – This mentor keeps you accountable. They are your accountability partner and tell you exactly how it is. Their main contribution to your success is the development of your self awareness and helping you convert your weaknesses into strengths.

Whatever the mentor type is, one thing true about great mentors is that they show genuine interest in others to bring best out of them.

Ah Yes George. A good mentor possesses the following qualities: Willingness to share skills, knowledge, and expertise. A good mentor is willing to teach what he/she knows and accept the mentee where they currently are in their professional development. Good mentors can remember what it was like just starting out in the field.

A Sounding Board. This is someone at a similar level to you in a different department. This type of mentor can help keep groups from becoming too siloed. Interesting.

    Garima,

The timing on this was perfect. I was praying for mentor this morning. I guess I imagined the Jedi type and not other variations. Good to know. Thank you,

In the Star Wars universe, a person only becomes a Jedi when he or she is specifically invited to do so by an established Jedi. That was the case with both Anakin and Luke Skywalker. Both were talented young men, but neither would have joined the Jedi Order if not for mentors who called them away from their narrow focuses and showed them a wider, more exciting world. In the same way, successful mentoring relationships only happen in the church when one person actively recruits another. A would-be mentor says, “I see potential in you, and I want to help you grow.” Or a mentee says, “You’re the kind of person I want to become, and I need you to help me grow.” In either case, biblical mentoring will only work when both parties have officially and intentionally bought in to the process and accepted their roles.

Great point. That gives me an idea for our podcast. Great mentors. What wisdom we need from them and as mentors pass on.
