To become more self-aware you have to be self-aware enough to realize how self-aware you are not. It’s a bootstrapping problem. Unless something happens that forces you to realize how inaccurate your view of yourself is, you can go through life never even knowing who you are.

We all tend to reject negative things we hear in favor of positive ones, even if the negative ones are more accurate. Learning about our blind spots, weaknesses or insecurities is emotionally difficult. Here are a few ways in which you can develop self awareness :

  • Look at yourself objectively. Try to identify your current understanding by writing out your perceptions.
  • Keep a journal. This will help you get a better idea of who you are and what you are and what you want out of life right now.
  • Write down your goals, plans and priorities. Plan out your goals in a worksheet so they turn from ideas into a step-by step process.
  • Perform daily self reflection. Start by setting aside just 15 minutes each day. Find a quiet place to think.
  • Practice meditation and other mindfulness habits. Meditation is the practice of improving your mindful awareness.
  • Take personality and psychometric tests. These tests compel respondents to think about a set of traits of characteristics that closely describe them relative to other people.
  • Ask trusted friends to describe you. Make sure your friends know that they are doing this to help you, not to hurt you.
  • Ask for feedback at work. Provided it is constructive and well done having an option for formalised feedback allows you to self reflect on our own strengths and weaknesses.

    1. Being self-aware helps not just build a strong therapeutic relationship, but also helps a lay person make more imformed decisions, and contributes to one’s overall wellbeing. It is important to remember that self-awareness is an individual’s ability to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of one’s own character. Glad you agree.!

    1. Have confidence to overcome any thoughts. Always remember no one can touch your thoughts unless you allow them to.

      1. Yes I am used to giving people access they probably shouldn’t have. It is a practice I am unlearning.

    1. The key is that we need to be aware of our distractions. Put another way, we need to make sure that we’re choosing our distractions and our distractions aren’t choosing us. We’re the ones opting into the distraction, rather than simply being unable to opt out of distraction. We need to know when we’re checking out. Our distraction needs to be planned and moderated in bite-sized chunks. We can’t binge on distraction. Glad you liked it.

    1. The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car. The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them; they control us. Whereas a person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little meta-cognition and say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodka. That might not be a coincidence,” a person without self-awareness just hits the bottle and doesn’t look back.

  7. Great post! and yes I totally agree with you Garima. Self awareness is the key. I wasn’t aware of this until recently when i started retrospecting on my life. I have tried the 3rd and 4th point in the process. Sometimes it is okay to take the “negative” feedback for the greater good. The main test is in identifying correct source of the that feedback and rejecting the noise. If we get that right, nothing better!

I recently posted on how we avoid and starve ourselves from feeling certain emotions just because someone told us it is a “negative” feeling. It would mean a lot if you could checkout my latest post and give me your feedback, if you have some time to spare 🙂 .

    Keep writing such inspiring posts!

    1. Yup, taking a negative feedback with a pinch of salt is very important. Listen don’t defend. Ask what the person giving you the feedback would consider more effective behavior from you or others involved. Listen don’t defend. Say thank you and acknowledge their perspective (this doesn’t mean you agree, instead it means you are listening). I’ll surely check out your post on emotions.

      1. True! Well put. Everyone has their own perspective and being right or wrong is very subjective. Smart thing to do would be to listen and take in all the input. Then decide what you want to do. The quality of listening is very important.

  8. Meditation works very well and i can testify. From the time i started it was very scary but I made peace with my self. The last two need men and women of courage.😂

    1. Yes that’s correct. Meditation training increases the ability to perceive the self in a more healthy, present-moment way. Mindful self-awareness is associated with decreased activation of brain regions associated with rumination, according to research published in the journal Biological Psychology.
