Why Dreams Beat To-Do Lists Every Time

As we embark on a new journey, let us pause, take a deep breath, and consider how we want this year to unfold. Not with ineffective resolutions, but with genuine dreams that motivate us every day. It’s easy to get caught up in the tornado of “shoulds” and “musts” in life, but what if we changed our perspective? What if, rather than making rigid commitments, we accepted dreams that actually inspire us and match with the life we want to live?

Resolutions can feel like a to-do list, motivated by society expectations rather than personal wants. They might be strict and even punitive, leaving us feeling like we’re continually falling short. In contrast, dreams are vast. They appeal to our deepest interests and ideals, making them energising rather than taxing. So, how can we accomplish this? Step one is to contemplate and dream big.

Before we decide what to focus on this year, let’s first consider what is most important to you. Before looking ahead, consider what has come before. What were some of the highlights of the past several years? What moments made you feel happy and proud? What did you achieve? What have you learnt? Take a time to write down five or ten achievements or experiences for which you are grateful. This introspection lays the stage for huge dreams.

Next, connect with your heart. Consider this: if you could only accomplish one thing this year, what would make you the most excited? Not 100 dreams, but one. What would you like to feel more of in your life? Is it freedom, joy, connection, or growth? Whatever comes to mind for you, accept it. This is the essence of dreaming: connecting with what is actually important to you.

The power of visualisation is a tool that we frequently underestimate. Close your eyes and visualise yourself one year from today. You had your best year ever. How does it look like? How are you feeling? Write everything down. This activity can help you create a realistic picture of your dreams, making them more tangible and reachable.

Now, let’s go on to step two: select your top three dreams. After reflecting, choose the ones that most resonate with you. These should feel both exciting and achievable. Consider the following aspects of your life: profession, purpose, business, health and wellness, fitness, relationships, fun and adventure, hobbies, and personal development. Make these dreams more meaningful. Ask yourself if this is consistent with my ideals. Will it make me happy or move me closer to the life I want? Visualise success. Consider commemorating these dreams at the end of the year. If the concept makes you grin, it’s worth pursuing.

Step three is critical: divide it down into manageable steps. A dream without a strategy is only a wish. Let’s make your aspirations a reality. Begin small. Divide each dream into manageable steps. For example, if your aim is to publish a book, your first step could be to set aside 20 minutes each day to brainstorm ideas. Make habits around your dreams. Commit to tiny, daily acts. behaviours are the foundation of success, and focussing on behaviours that support your goals is critical. Also, assess which behaviours may be impeding your success.

Regular check-ins are crucial. Schedule weekly, monthly, or quarterly check-ins to assess progress and alter your strategy as needed. This keeps your dreams alive and growing. If you’re stuck for ideas, here are a few to get you started. Perhaps it’s a healthier you—running a 5K, preparing nutritious meals, or prioritising sleep. Perhaps it’s about adventure—planning a trip, learning a new skill, or taking up a new hobby. It could be about inner growth, such as adopting a gratitude practice, meditating on a daily basis, or joining an inspirational community. Perhaps it’s artistic pursuits—starting a passion project or taking a course to learn something new.

It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it fulfils your dreams. So, how about we make a pledge right now to choose three aspirations that actually inspire us this year? These dreams should seem like soul whispers pulling you ahead, and you are free to pursue them in your own unique way. Take a time to write them down and keep them somewhere you can see them every day.

Remember that tiny measures executed consistently yield extraordinary outcomes. Accept the journey, appreciate the process, and commemorate each milestone along the way. Here’s to a year filled with dreams that will inspire, motivate, and transform. Let’s make 2025 the best year yet, not by ticking off resolutions, but by fulfilling our dreams every day.
