Walking on both sides of the river is a perfect description of my mental health.

I’ve been fighting with myself all the time for a very long time—maybe for too long. I am a hopeless dreamer and a pessimistic realist to the extent of nihilism. Neither the theory of one nor the mysticism of the other have ever really captivated me. Instead, these are two innate tendencies that I have known about since I was a very young child, though it is true that the dreamer arrived before the nihilist. It became apparent to me at some time in my life that dreaming is useless. Be realistic and focus on the important things. Never aim too high, but always put in a lot of effort while remaining humble. These were the maxims I absorbed from my environment passively as I was growing up.
The voices around me were a doctrine of dread speaking to me. a philosophy developed over many years of overcoming adversity and overcoming the suffering around us by moving cautiously where everyone else was falling. I revere these voices, and I can tell from the trembling in their voices that I need to feel the same fear that has made them so cautious. But we were not all created equally. For whatever reason possibly as a result of blended parentage, possibly because the substance that took physical form in this body was more spirit than soul. The truth is that whenever I tried to lead myself through a purely practical path without a genuine purpose, one devoid of meaning or clear direction, my entire being eventually suffered one way or another.
Dreams Are Needed
I believe, or at least believe to be true for myself, that without a very clear future to strive for, we are aimless and without a purpose. Furthermore, the nature of that particular destiny must align with the individual’s particular desires. They can’t be used to talk about something that is essentially aspirational. Such pictures might be offered to us as postcards at a tourist stand, and we might purchase them out of the thrill of the moment. But in the long term, each person must take care of their unique needs. I worked day and night after realising this, constantly asking myself what I really desired. Some things can only be fully understood once you are confronted with them. Although it’s possible that we all want to be insanely wealthy, the true question is how much it will cost. We might also aspire to have the aesthetically pleasing physique that only 1% of people have, but getting and keeping one takes a lot of unpaid effort.
Only a select few people, like the two people mentioned above, genuinely have narrow dreams and a ferocious fire that drives them to succeed. And they might continue them by investing in other useful projects. finding significance not only through them but also elsewhere. These extreme instances also serve to highlight how crucial it is to limit the scope of your goals. I imagine that if I had a burning desire to write fiction exclusively, I could probably produce two to three volumes a year. Since I enjoy writing and am conscious of other aspects of my personality, I am well aware of this. The specifics of how to approach this, potential outcomes, the all-too-feared writer’s block, and other issues can be discussed, but in general, I believe the aforementioned to be accurate.
Action Is Required
By choosing a moving-away strategy as opposed to a moving-to one, some people can still thrive without specific goals that are projected into the future. The foundation of the first of these is dread. It can be a dread of being poor or irrelevant, or really anything that confines the person to their own four walls. The latter, on the other hand, concentrates on what the person wants in life. None of these things can ensure success of any kind, which depends completely on consistency, tenacity, wise choices, and all the other traits that only a select few are willing to pursue and master. This cannot be avoided. Your chances of success in whatever you choose increase with the amount of labour and output you produce.
Thinking that the appropriate time will come in the future is a trap that many of us fall into, including myself in the past. There will never be a time more suitable than the present to start preparing for or moving towards the present not the future, but the present we want. Why is this particular wording crucial? Because whatever we perceive as “the future” is merely how our actions caused the evolving present to evolve. The more I observed the years pass by and the moment reality set in, the more I realised there would be no break in the routine or tides shifting, only that I would have to swim against the current and make things happen.
The Perfect Fusion
Since it has been established that performing and dreaming are both crucial aspects of human existence, the solution doesn’t even need to be stated. You fantasise about something, then you take action to make it happen. All is well so far. It’s nothing new, really. However, the lesson at least for myself lies in the specifics. First of all, I think you need to be genuinely passionate about what you do. For what you hope to construct. And by passion, I do not mean a desire to study, watch, or listen to it. You need to be able to maintain that passion and connect it to the action. to the endeavour that yields outcomes.
Your enthusiasm shouldn’t just be in getting your book published, collecting millions of dollars in royalties, or becoming a well-known author. The enjoyment comes from filing out page after page, writing cadential paragraphs, stringing together meaningful sentences, and picking the appropriate words. While making an investment in the future, you fully engage in the undertaking.
Second, I’ve learned that as you become immersed in the process on a daily basis, you start to form subtle preferences for particular items. Perhaps it has to do with where you sit, the note-taking tool you use (marker and paper), or the word processor you use. What I really want to write about has been the focus of a continuous process of elimination in my situation. Ultimately, it appears that doing more of what you want to do and doing it quicker and faster is the key to getting where you want to go. Both number and quality should be considered. We improve and readjust to accommodate more of what we do best when we pay attention to quality within reasonable bounds. A focus on quantity allows us to try more things, try them more than once, and practise and improve the same skill.
In general, you can cross the waterway to the practical side and see your life and what you want to do with it from a particular perspective. Alternately, you could cross over to the other side and continue to daydream while doing nothing. I think being able to see things from both perspectives is the key. Spend some time switching between them, or, as I hope to be able to do someday, learn the skill of bilocation so you can fantasise while you are awake and let others share in your dreamworld.
