It’s the middle of the week and already I am tired and overwhelmed. Well we all have weeks like these. Quite often people wait for holidays or weekends for self reflection. In my opinion though, self reflection is of utmost importance during the middle of a busy week.

“The true purpose of self-reflection is to correct our mistaken thoughts and actions, and learn from them, thereby creating a more constructive life. Self-reflection is not just the simple act of discovering past mistakes and making up for these mistakes, like resetting a negative to zero. The ultimate objective of self-reflection is the development of a more positive self and the realization of a utopia on earth as the fulfillment of God’s will.”

~ From the book: Ten Principles of Universal Wisdom

Let us look at some habits which we can inculcate for self reflection and personal growth

  1. Be honest : Being honest with yourself about how things are going and how you are behaving.
  2. Notice Behaviour Patterns : Be aware of your habit so you can actively weaken the ones you don’t want and strengthen the ones you do want.
  3. Be Able to articulate your core values : Take time to consider what’s most important to you so that you can evaluate whether or not you’re living those values.
  4. Be forgiving : Be gentle with yourself when you don’t get it right. We all make mistakes.
  5. Keep track of your self-reflection : Start a journal where you record you observations and monitor your personal growth.

So you do have a self -reflection routine? Share here with the larger community to help others. Looking forward to your comments :). Happy Wednesday!

  1. I used to do self-reflection everyday, and subconsciously most of the time. But I don’t do it as much anymore. I want to get back to it, though.

@Betul Erbasi, I used to do that too, but it’s super hard to be persistent, so we all agree to fight for self-reflection routine?

    1. Writing down your thoughts can help relieve pressure or help resolve problems. It will also help you focus the task at hand. To share your thoughts and ideas with others. Getting opinions from others about what you wrote can help you clarify your feelings for a deeper understanding of yourself. I maintain a journal everyday. Do you?

  7. I do write in a journal but sadly I feel like I’m not writing what I should or want .. for some reason I always feel like I’m holding back … does that make sense?

    1. It is okay. It will all come slowly. But keep on writing. Write whatever you are able to. It’s your own personal life. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Write what comes naturally. :):) don’t judge.

      1. Thank you …. it’s odd tho when I write on my blog it’s so natural but then when I journal it feels forced .. odd?

      2. If writing gets too heavy, try painting with water colours. Just move the brush on the paper. See which colours do you use often. You could alternatively try doodling too.

      3. I like that idea I can already tell you what colors I will use a lot purple reds and yellow.

      4. Purple is colour of the divine. Red is power and feminine side of a human and yellow is to ward of negative energy. Great colours you have there :):)

    2. I’ve heard that you’ll do better when your journal about the good stuff and of course when the bad stuff happens, you’ll want to to get it down quickly and burn it – keep in far away from the stuff you’ll be holding onto in your journal!

    1. A little bit of self reflection should be done everyday. Gratitude is one thing that you can practice everyday.

  9. In lovely journals, I write out my responses to the Daily Examen – an ancient prayer practice that uses guiding questions to reflect on the day. It has been life changing. And making reflection a routine is key – don’t you think?
And P.S. Thanks for visiting LivingCenter…xoxox

    1. Writing daily will help improve your self-awareness practice by providing you with a written record of your thoughts, so you can reflect on them more easily than relying on your memory alone. As you write, you’ll begin to see what’s holding you back from making the change you want to make in your life.

  10. I take time every few months to look through my journals and note any themes, patterns, and cycles I see. I then deal with each one until I understand the root of the issue.

    Great post!!

    1. Self reflection is like looking into a mirror and describing what you see. It is a way of assessing yourself, your ways of working and how you study. To put it simply ‘reflection’ means to think about something. Reflecting and composing a piece of self reflective writing is becoming an increasingly important element to any form of study or learning. Thank you. I am glad you liked my post.

  11. I enjoyed your post. Reflection is very important to me too and discerning the patterns. Sadly, its lacking for many people today

    1. Self reflection helps to build emotional self-awareness. By taking the time to ask yourself the important questions, you gain a better understanding of your emotions, strengths, weaknesses and driving factors. Once you understand important aspects of the self, you become better able to adapt to changing situations and tough circumstances.

  12. I’ve got a little routine I picked up from NLP – I’ve programmed myself to get in touch with myself and how I’m feeling – whenever I lay my right hand over my left – perfect for meetings or public transport when you don’t want anything too obvio
us – but the more I do it, the better it works – it’s my form of mindfulness and I love it!

    1. Thank you for sharing a great exercise with us Debra. In any role, whether at home or at work, reflection is an important part of learning. You wouldn’t use a recipe a second time around if the dish didn’t work the first time would you? You would either adjust the recipe or find a new and, hopefully, better one. When we learn we can become stuck in a routine that may not be working effectively. Thinking about your own skills can help you identify changes you might need to make.
