Dehydration is the excessive loss of body water with an accompanying disruption of metabolic processes. Dehydration is a major cause of infant illness and death throughout the world and hospitalisation for the elderly. On an average, 10 cup of fluid a day is lost through sweating, exhaling, urinating and bowel movements. Adults require 2-3 L of fluids per day.
Here are a few causes of dehydration :
- Blood loss or hypotension due to physical trauma.
- Loss of fluid through weeping burns or other injury
- Crying
- Hyperthermia
- Diarrhoea
- Fever
- Shock (hypovolemic)
- Vomiting or nausea
Here are a few common signs and symptoms of dehydration that you should look out for :
- Thirst
- Headache
- General discomfort
- Loss of appetite
- Dry Skin
- Decreased urine volume
- Confusion
- Unexplained tiredness
- Irritability
So what should we do about it? Well, drink some water..duh. Other than water, here is a list of some hydrating foods that you can include in your diet :
- Cucumber
- Watermelon
- Celery
- Grapefruit
- Radish
- Tomatoes
- Cauliflower
- Strawberries
- Cantaloupe
- Broccoli
