Happiness is your birth right, it is your natural state of being, it is the essence of living, it is what we were born to do. Stay Happy. But then there are rainy days, not the ones which encourage umbrella and raincoats, but the downs in life. The heavy rains of life can fall suddenly and pour incessantly for long periods of time and for too many reasons to list here. But let’s focus on being happy on such a rainy day, shall we? So what do we do about it? Here is a list of things you could do stay balanced in life everyday and even on those bad days.

  1. Express Gratitude > Thank someone and be appreciate towards your colleagues, every single day.
  2.  Give > Give something to another person or make it possible for others to offer gifts.
  3. Help > Help someone who is in need of assistance, or enable people to help each other.
  4. Eat Well > Eat well, and make good, healthy foods easily available for everyone.
  5. Exercise > Exercise and work out regularly and make it easy for people to take care of their bodies.
  6. Rest > Rest well, sleep sufficiently, and enable people to refresh their minds
  7. Experience > Experience new things, try stuff out, and let people run all kinds of experiments.
  8. Hike > Hike outdoors, enjoy nature, and allow people an escape from the office and the city.
  9. Meditate > Meditate and get people to learn and adopt mindfulness practices.
  10. Socialize > Socialize, relate to other people, and make it easy for colleagues to develop connections.
  11. Aim > Aim for a goal and get people to understand and realize their won purpose.
  12. Smile > Smile whenever you can, appreciate humor, and get colleagues to engage in fun activities.

The possible responses to such a question can be legion. I would still love to hear from you in the comments about how you have managed to stay happy during the rainy times of your life. What advice would you offer others who were going through hard times?

  1. Along with the things you have listed I benefit from reading books (positive, inspiring ones) and I always get cheered up by watching TED talks. 🙂

    1. Yea that’s my favourite too. But I am cautious about getting a happy high and lose touch with reality. During my happy highs I tend to look at things from happy tinted glasses and not how the reality is. We all need some grounding 🙂

  2. Just hang in there till you’re stronger to get on to the next level. It’s important to pass this level and like other levels, this too shall pass! ✌️👍

  3. Thanks for the post. Aside from the things you mentioned, I dance. Dancing for me is an art and keeps me motivated. So I dance it out.

Music heals the soul and listening to my favorite songs is another thing I’ve been doing everytime I go sideways. I just go drive and turn on my favorite playlist. Keeps me relaxed and refreshed.

  4. My advice would be to focus on the present and future not the the past. You can’t do anything about the mistakes and the reasons for being sad etc, but you take them with you and create a better today and tomorrow.

  5. There’s no anecdote to being happier, it’s just synonymous by being yourself and believing in oneself. Well, I tried exercising for two weeks in row, it made me rather stressful, it’s just a fitter body which we long for and makes us happy in the long run.

  6. Periodically throw in even a small positive thought or action to slowly lessen the hardness of those times. Artwork, gardening, playing some guitar, meditation– these work for me.

    1. Ah yes, how can I forget. Listening to moving music causes the brain to release dopamine, a feel-good chemical. People love music for much the same reason they’re drawn to sex, drugs, gambling and delicious food, according to new research. The reinforcement or reward happens almost entirely because of dopamine. Thank you for reminding me.

    1. You are most welcome Chhaya. Although we may sometimes neglect to cultivate our own happiness, feeling happy is intrinsically important. If we are happy it has added knock on effects and benefits. These include us becoming more compassionate and feeling healthier both physically and emotionally. We become more creative, witty, energetic and fun to be around and it can also lead us to become more financially successful.
