How to Build Self – Esteem

“Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the face.” These are the words from Helen Keller, a lady who conquered the world with her self-confidence and self-esteem. Before getting into how to build self-esteem, you should be clear about the concept of self-esteem. In simple words, it is your opinion about yourself — impressive or unimpressive. Do you believe you are successful? How do you see yourself? What do you think of your social status? Your answers to these sorts of questions will give you an idea about your self-esteem. Maintaining a high level of self-esteem is very important, as low self-esteem can be disastrous to your happiness. It feeds your negative thinking and you will start criticizing yourself and thus, you may end up in a conclusion that you are simply useless. This may even lead to serious psychological problems and suicidal tendency. So, self-esteem is crucial in developing positive attitude towards life. Read on to learn about how to build self-esteem. 

  1. Stop the Negative Voice – We all have a negative voice lurking inside us. This voice speaks up when a challenge arises. The key to dealing with your gremlin is to be aware it’s there. That way, it can’t surprise you.
  2. Be Charitable – Going out of your way to do something for someone else could well transform the way you feel about yourself. It makes you think positively about yourself. Plan your act of kindness today.
  3. Manage your Expectations – Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Setting yourself challenges is the right thing to do. The key is to be realistic with you plans. You are looking for achievable challenges, not impossible ones. 
  4. Accept Success – Each night before you go to bed, write down three positive things that happened or that you did during the day. Then smile. Do this every night for the foreseeable future. 
  5. Change Your Ways – You need to think completely differently. You need to think of “new” as exciting and different. Not scary and impossible. It’s very important to change your mind-set here. 
  6. Know How you Come Across – Be sure people see you the way you think they do. Most people get this wrong and think they come across worse than they actually do. they stop themselves doing things as a result.
  7. Stop Saying Sorry – There’s no need to keep apologizing. By saying sorry, you are sending the message to people that you doubt yourself. Only say sorry if you actually need to. 
  8. Don’t Compare – Try to base your expectations of yourself on what you do and your own aspirations, not what others are doing. There is nothing positive to be gained from worrying about how you are compared to others.

Self-esteem springs up from self-dominion. The more you believe in yourself, the more you respect yourself. Unless you respect yourself, how will others respect you?  Always believe that you have a unique set of talents and abilities which no other person has. Rise in your own eyes and thus, rise in others’ too.

    • Thank you. I am glad you liked it. Someone with low self-esteem has negative feelings about themselves, believing that they are not worthy of love, happiness or success. With research linking low self-esteem to mental health issues and poor quality-of-life, this is a potentially dangerous way to live.


    • Self-esteem is like that, except it is yourself that you love, care for and feel proud of. When children believe they are valuable and important, they take good care of themselves. They make good decisions about themselves which enhance their value rather than break it down.

    • When you value yourself and have good self-esteem, you feel secure and worthwhile. You have generally positive relationships with others and feel confident about your abilities. You’re also open to learning and feedback, which can help you acquire and master new skills. Glad you found your self esteem in time. Good luck. Do daily affirmations and keep building them up.

  1. Wow!!! Can I get that list? I do have low self esteem and I’ve had it all my life due to my disability. I’m going to try your tips and I’ll let you know if they work or not.

    • In many cases, and particularly when we’re young, our feelings about ourselves are heavily influenced by how others feel about and treat us – especially our parents or guardians. Everyone deserves a loving family, but some young people have the misfortune of not getting adequate support at home. Parents or guardians with mental health issues, substance abuse issues or other challenges may not be able to provide their children with the care, guidance and attention they need and deserve. This can cause significant self-esteem problems for young people, as those who are supposed to care for them most may not seem to.
