Warning Signs of Stroke

A stroke is a sudden interruption in the blood supply of the brain. 1 in 6 people will have a stroke in their lifetime. Stroke can happen at any age, three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65 years.

Here are the warning signs of stroke (BEFAST):

  • Balance – Loss of balance, headache or dizziness.
  • Eyes – Blurred vision
  • Face – One side of the face is drooping
  • Arms – Arm or leg weakness
  • Speech – Speech difficulty
  • Time – Time to call for ambulance immediately.

Prevention is better than cure and here are a few ways in which you can prevent stroke :

  • Keep your blood pressure low
  • Lower your cholesterol
  • Eat healthy food
  • Exercise regularly
  • Treat sleep apnea
  • Manage your diabetes
  • Drink in moderation
  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid stress
  • Maintain an healthy weight
