What do you do when you’re bored at work? Bored of eating healthy and exercising? Bored of your relationship? Do you keep going or throw your hands up and give up? When we first get started, we’re excited and highly motivated to take action towards our goals. But after a few days or weeks, we begin to make excuses and procrastinate on following through on our plans.
Here are few effective, science-backed ways you can overcome boredom whilst working towards your goals :
- Give yourself a time frame to complete the task. Rather than having your boring task stretch out over 1 hour, 2 hours or more, set a timer for a specific chunk of time so you are motivated to get as much done before the buzzer goes off.
- Make your work environment more stimulating. Stuck with a lame chore or task? Listen o an interesting podcast, new music, work with a friend, work at a cool new coffee shop, etc.
- See the greater purpose or silver lining of your boring task. You filling out the forms means that people can get their pay checks and feed their families. You washing the dishes means your roommate won’t passive aggressively ruin your evening. You spending another day in a job you hair means you might finally find the guts to pursue your dreams.
- Have something to look forward to after getting the boring task done. Schedule something fun to do afterwards so you are motivated to get most to all of it completely done.
- Get some cool brainstorming done while you are doing said boring task. Xeroxing? Washing your car? Coloraturas coding spreadsheets? Brainstorm your next best selling book or world changing invention.
- Turn your boring tasks into a meditative experience. Feel your fingertips hitting the keyboard. Listen to the soft hum of fluorescent lightning. Mindfully savour the nuanced flavours of your break room coffee.
- Learn something new about your boring task. Need to clog your sink? Learn more about how sink drains work. Hate crunching numbers? See if there are any cool apps or programs that would make your task easier.
- Be grateful. Your boring task could be a lot worse. Hate your job duties? Congratulations, you’re not unemployed. Hate housework? Congratulations, you’re not homeless. Gratitude is your best friend.
