Learning to break a bad habit is a process. It’s important to recognize that you won’t always get it right on the first try. But taking a step back does not make you weak, it means you need to rest, regroup and get back up again.

The journey is not easy and it can be filled with a lot of self-doubt and negative self-talk. Despite setbacks, it’s normal to feel discouraged. But we can’t let those negative moments impact our progress.

It’s easier said than done but treating ourselves with kindness and understanding can make an enormous difference. It’s important to be our biggest champion. Instead of losing faith, we should stay motivated to keep pushing ourselves towards our goals.

It is important to strive for progress, not perfection. Celebrate each little victory. Those small steps, these sacrifices will add up over time and will get us closer to breaking the bad habit.

Being strict with yourself is key but don’t beat yourself up if you have a lapse. Self-discipline requires the ability to recommit every day – in the face of frustration and disappointment. Treat yourself with the kindness and respect that you would show a dear friend.

It can be hard, though. Distractions and triggers linger and certain situations make us more vulnerable to old patterns. But we must remind ourselves of our personal reasons to break the habit. Where the will goes, there can be a way.

Remember, it’s not always going to be linear and there will be moments of confidence alongside moments of worry. Try not to think about how difficult it will be in the long term. Focus, instead, on what we can control in this moment.

We need to take it one day, or one step at a time. We need to believe in ourselves and our ability to change. Ultimately, our dreams and goals are achievable and our bad habits, hopelessly breakable.

So, take that breath, take another shot, and keep pushing forward. Don’t give up on the journey towards self-improvement. Even the smallest changes can make a big difference in the end. Progress may be imperfect, but it is progress nonetheless.
