The world has become a daunting and perplexing place, where the virtues of goodness, kindness and empathy are no longer celebrated and embraced but are deemed as weaknesses.

We live in times where greed, deceit, self-centeredness and aggression have become entrenched and are encouraged. The result is the marginalization of all those who possess the qualities of integrity, respect, and compassion. We now live in a world where power, popularity, fame and wealth have become synonymous with success, leaving little room for truly good people.

We live in a world where the emphasis of everything is on being strong, competitive and ruthless. It is no longer enough to be competent, compassionate and altruistic; we are now encouraged to be winners, to succeed at all costs, and to be the best by any means necessary. This idea of perpetual advancement and success has led to the idolization of people with ruthless streaks, leading to moral decay that has eroded all three pillars of society – morality, ethics and compassion.

The media has played a significant role in reinforcing these attitudes. Rather than presenting people who exhibit kindness and generosity to others, they instead glorify and celebrate people who engage in excessive pleasures, have great wealth and do not shy away from extreme ruthlessness. Their popularity in turn leads to them being influencers and celebrities, leaving little room for morality and personality traits such as kindness and compassion.

This lack of value for good people also stems from our own individual lives. Nowadays, people lack basic communal principles. There has been a noticeable lack of admiration and respect for those who act empathetically and compassionate towards their fellow neighbors- mainstream ideals of the world promote competition among humans rather than cooperation.

When interacting with others, we often place little consideration upon the impact our actions have upon others. We live in a culture dominated by self-righteousness and self-indulgence. We tend to be more concerned with our personal needs and desires, and disregard how others will be affected. We value consumership over decency, and undermining the value of traits such as empathy, compassion and… that are guides to being a reliable, supportive, interactive members of society.

In conclusion, the world is suffering because good people are becoming an endangered species. The rapid decline in valuation of people with fundamental character traits such as kindness, intelligence, respect, and understanding signals the beginning of a new era, one that is heading towards peril. Instead of encouraging and cherishing the empathetic and humanitarian principles we once held close to our hearts, the culture of the world now prioritizes the popular dominant principles that undermine human values and our shared humanity. For societies to reach justice, a focus on basic empathy and concern must be emphasized, and we need to start resurfacing the positives over the negatives.

  1. This post resonates on so many levels because I have found myself baffled when I see that good qualities are seen as odd nowadays. It seems as if dignity has a price in the world of 2023, and I kind of understand the purpose behind a “fake it until you make it” mentality. It temporarily allows people to appear be strong, but my hope is that humanitarian values supersede the ideology and constant need for gratification that is attempting to engulf the future generations of society.

    1. I hope that people will always value being kind to others and that future generations will prioritize fairness, justice, and treating everyone with respect. Being kind helps bring people together, no matter their background. It’s important to teach everyone to treat others well and to value every person. We should all work together to build a society that is fair and caring.

    1. I believe you are okay but you know best. To handle tough situations better and have healthier relationships with others, it’s important to recognize and control our tendency to blame others. By being aware of our own behavior, we can respond with more patience and understanding.

      1. We know “myself” is not the true self. It often masquerades as the true self. Blaming behavior unmasks it.

  3. I see the point in your lament. And I believe good people are still around and they are a majority most of the time. They just got quieter.
