As humans we all have observed humans and behaviors closely. One of the aspects that saddens me the most is the prevalence of toxic mindsets that are considered normal in society.

These mindsets can be insidious and harmful, perpetuating negative narratives, judgment, and harm towards ourselves and others. I believe it is crucial to identify and overcome these mindsets to lead a fulfilling life and build a more supportive and understanding world.

The first toxic mindset I have noticed is the need for perfection. Society rewards those who excel and outperform- academic achievements, looks, athletic abilities, career advancements- everything needs to be flawless. However, the pursuit of perfection can lead to self-doubt, anxiety, and the inability to appreciate oneself. This mentality can also inherently lead to disdain towards those who fall short and create unrealistic expectations of others. Rather than striving for perfection, it needs to be accepted that everyone has or should have their unique qualities, achievements, and flaws.

Another damaging mindset is our society’s aversion to vulnerability. Being vulnerable often equates to being weak or sensitive in society. But avoiding vulnerability leads to superficial relationships and an inability to form deep connections with others. We miss out on the richness that comes with authenticity and the beauty of feeling emotions in their raw form. Furthermore, by idolizing strength and “toughness,” we may discourage seeking help when needed, which can lead to continued suffering and even trauma.

A related mindset that perpetuates toxic masculinity is the inability to openly express emotions, particularly negative emotions such as sadness, fear, or anger. Society expects men to be stoic and unemotional, which limits the range of emotional conversations and often leads to anger or repression. This mindset can have serious consequences, leading to depression, emotional numbness, or even suicide, when these emotions are not properly processed.

Another common mindset that prevails is the internalization of beauty standards. Society has set a narrow definition of what beauty ought to be, which can lead to harmful behaviors such as crash diets, plastic surgery, or overt self-judgment. Beauty standards make people believe that they must look and behave a certain way to be desirable while shaming those who do not conform. The notion of a perfect body must be eliminated because bodies come in various shapes and sizes.

Lastly, there is a tendency to view ourselves and others through a biased and critical lens. We can generalize people by race, religion, gender, socioeconomic class, or just about anything. This can result in divisive and prejudiced behavior, leading to conflicts, wars, and violence, advancing everyone significantly. It is important to appreciate and understand differences and realize that everyone is unique.

In conclusion, the way we perceive ourselves shapes how we perceive the world around us. If we adopt harmful and toxic mindsets, they ultimately result in negative outcomes for ourselves and those around us. It’s possible to break free of these toxic thought processes by acknowledging their existence, understanding why they are harmful and choosing to address them thoughtfully. It’s not an overnight process, but when these behaviors change, it has a transformative and enduring effect on every relationship we have.

    1. Perfection is often considered an unattainable ideal, something that is flawless and without any imperfections. However, true perfection includes the imperfect, as it is through accepting and embracing our flaws and mistakes that we can grow and improve. Imperfections add character and uniqueness, and can even be seen as strengths in certain situations.
