Organized religion has played a dominant role in many societies, shaping cultures and traditions over the centuries.

However, when we consider the impact that many religions have had on entire societies, we must also examine the issues that arose from religious institutions acting against the advancement of societal interests. In many ways, organized religion has become a barrier to progressive thinking by promoting dogmatic beliefs, prejudices, and idealogy, which causes societal decline. I believe that organized religion has become a hindrance to modern society, preventing the further advancement of civilization.
One of the core issues of organized religion is the continued premise of faith vs reason. The capacity for critical thinking is undermined by religious dogma, which asks adherents to accept core beliefs on faith alone, without any burden of proof. In demanding only belief as the medium of acceptance, religion instances the suspension of reason and critical thinking. This has led to brainwashing and indoctrination which results in persistent attachments to unsupportable beliefs and ignorance of knowledge grounded in science and facts. It is in essence an attempt to shut down rational debate that could help society progress.
Organized religion in several ways creates division and segregation. Orthodox religious values create a pecking order in which some members are rated more highly than others. Examples include gender inequality, discrimination of people, caste systems, stigmatization of marginalized groups and rigid codes of conduct. Often discrimination is directed towards individuals who have different beliefs, worldviews or political opinions, limiting diversity, devaluing humanity and magnifying societal inequality. This division, lack of diversity and stereotyping promote rigid systems that imprison individuals in strict and hierarchical roles, further constraining progress from happening.
The rise of secularism is what has ignited the discourse about religion’s importance. The Church’s mishandling of science and history has magnified gaps that make religion glaringly unfit for the modern world. Although secularism, for the most part, is returning to the critical consensus around science and reasoning, religion continues to offer a dogmatic belief system that contradicts truth-seeking and reasoning, making it incompatible in many ways to positive societal growth.
This stubbornly accumulated tendency makes it difficult in many ways for religion to facilitate the complex issues and exclusive challenges of modern society. Collaborative and creative solutions are required in navigating these challenges, and logic suggests that a rejection of dogma is the way to go. Societal decline is attributed to compounded issues arising from the flaws of entrenched beliefs which religion promotes— making it a precursor toward retrogressing into a society full of closed-minded people who are not interested in expanding their horizons.
Max Weber’s theorem regarding disenchantment suggests that religion is likely headed for inevitable decline. Modernization, secularization, and evolution of human consciousness have created systems that unify people without faiths, dogma and traditional norms that organized religion promotes. With a decline in births, lack of enthusiasm by youths to practice such beliefs and perceived mis-spacing of the worldviews of organized religion, it is clear that a secularized human race is on the horizon of human civilization.
The rise of rational discourse, independent thinking and scientific discovery should be the foundation upon which society is built, as opposed to religious tenets that anchor on dogma and misinformation. With an increasing separation of church and state, scientific reasoning, love, kindness, compassion, social justice, creativity, and innovation, we can craft new, functional solutions to challenges that remain for the modern world.
In conclusion, while organized religion played a significant role in the history of human societies, it does not meet the needs of the modern world. Dogmatic beliefs are inferior to science and solid reasoning, leading to faulty knowledge that has negative implications for modern societies that are seeking vibrant progress. Progress can only be achieved by fostering collaborative and creative solutions that are grounded in rational thinking and evidence-based problem solving. Ultimately, the focus should be on developing a non-dogmatic and non-discriminatory society, a collective to which all people can contribute positively.
