  1. I think the key to helping any patient is listening to them when they’re describing what is going on. Many appointments are too short or too rushed to get the full scope – especially with mental health. When subjective experience is being conveyed, there needs to be a baseline of trust that what a person is experiencing is their truth. It’s easy to get too textbook and try to get the right diagnosis, code, etc. but people rarely fit in boxes or categories. I think sometimes too much emphasis is placed on the diagnosis and not listening, and people suffer for it.
