How to Manage Your Life When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed

You keep thinking, “I have so much to do and so little time!” Oh, anyway, congrats, my dear: You’re inundated. We’ve all had the sensation of being “overwhelmed” at some point. It’s the feeling of being overburdened with work or stress and not being able to keep up. It can tyre us mentally, emotionally, and physically and impair our capacity to work productively. You know, the stage where you spend hours fretting about something that only needs to be done in ten minutes.

So, how does being overburdened feel? Physical symptoms can include tiredness, trouble sleeping, changes in appetite, and tension or pain throughout the body. We may experience emotional tension, annoyance, or depression. Cognitively, we could struggle to focus, decide what to do, or recall things. When you yell at a puppy because your cappuccino isn’t hot enough, it might occasionally appear as though a short fuse is exploding. Even if we are aware that it is absurd, we have all experienced it. Being overwhelmed could have a number of different causes. Having too much work or responsibility, not having enough control or authority over decisions, having ambiguous expectations or goals, being a perfectionist, not having enough resources or assistance, and dealing with internal or external stressors are a few of the more typical ones.

When you’re feeling overburdened, it’s crucial to look after yourself. This can entail taking a break and indulging in self-care activities like exercising, practising meditation, or taking up a hobby. It’s also beneficial to prioritise jobs, divide them into manageable chunks, and assign them to others when it’s practical to do so. In order to avoid overwhelm, it can also be helpful to set boundaries and develop your ability to refuse. It might also be beneficial to look for assistance from friends, family, or a therapist. And on sometimes, it can even just require that you take a break from your regular activities and do something completely unrelated.

Being focused and present in the moment is another method for dealing with overwhelm. This can assist us in sharpening our attention on what matters most and letting go of unneeded concerns. It’s critical to keep in mind that feeling overwhelmed is normal and that everyone goes through it occasionally. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance if you’re having trouble controlling your feelings of overwhelm. A therapist or counsellor can offer assistance and direction in identifying constructive coping mechanisms. Or, even better, go apologise and spend some time playing with the dog.

We are human beings, not human doings, as my doctor recently reminded me. Therefore, be sure to set aside time to “be” rather than merely “do.” Being overwhelmed is a frequent and reasonable emotion that can have negative repercussions on our bodies, minds, and spirits. We can learn to control and get rid of feelings of overwhelm by taking pauses, breaking work down, prioritising and delegating, setting boundaries, getting help, and engaging in mindfulness practises. And if you are truly stuck, change your attention to something equally as significant and let it consume you, like as an excellent erotica or a massive buffet.

Listen, I know it’s terrifying, unpleasant, and extremely distressing right now, but you’ll be OK. This is something you must do for yourself. You must go beyond what is known and strive to believe that you will be fine no matter what. Even if things don’t work out. Even if you don’t find what you’re looking for, it’s still a good thing to show that you tried. It is with this thought I introduce my new book “Acceptance”. Hope we find the courage to accept what is. https://a.co/d/jli7oHN
