Heart Healthy Foods

The foods you eat directly impact your cardiovascular health. Improving your diet can help you manage current health conditions, such as high cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar, and can also help prevent future health problems. Saturated and trans fats can be especially harmful to your heart and arteries. A heart-healthy diet is low in these harmful fats but includes moderate amounts of healthy fats. Mono- and polyunsaturated fats, especially omega-3 fats, are good for your heart. 

Here are some heart healthy foods :

  • Salmon – Omega 3 in salmon helps prevent heart disease.
  • Kidney Beans – High in fibre and lowers cholesterol.
  • Almonds – Protects artery walls from damage.
  • Oatmeal – Lowers the rise in blood sugar after meals.
  • Flaxseed – Prevents hardening of the arteries.
  • Walnuts – Helps cholesterol, blood pressure and inflammation.
  • Broccoli – Can lower cholesterol and helps facilitate digestion.
  • Tuna – Aids in the prevention of irregular heart rhythms.
  • Carrots – Improves visions and helps prevent heart disease.
  • Blueberries – Antioxidants/ fibre helps prevent heart disease.
  • Brown Rice – Lowers cholesterol and risk of diabetes.
  • Spinach – Helps brain function and improves blood pressure.
  • Sweet Potato – Helps reduce stress levels.
  • Asparagus – Helps breakdown carcinogens and free radicals.
  • Cantaloupe – Helps thin blood and prevents blood clots.
  • Oranges – Helps control heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Tomatoes – Wards off inflammation and blood clots.
  • Dark Chocolate – In moderation can lower blood pressure.

      Heart-healthy eating, along with regular exercise or physical activity, can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is the number 1 cause of death for America. Stoke is at Number 3.
