It’s The Season of Infused Water

Does Vitamin Water Have Health Benefits? instead, try infused water

I used to drink vitamin water a lot, especially after exercising or walking. I liked the different flavors and the idea of having extra vitamins and minerals in my drink. I thought it was a better choice than soda or juice, which has too much sugar and calories. But I learned that vitamin water might not be as healthy as it seems. There could be more disadvantages than advantages. Before getting a bottle of vitamin water, here are some things to know, and some alternatives to try.

What is Vitamin Water? Vitamin water is a drink you can buy at the store that has vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, and flavors added to water. It’s marketed as a drink that gives you hydration and nutrition.

Vitamin water has some benefits that may interest you. Here are a few advantages:

  1. It tastes good and comes in different flavors like lemonade, dragonfruit, strawberry, and orange. This can help you drink more fluids and stay hydrated.
  2. It contains some nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin B, zinc, and magnesium which can support muscle function, immunity, energy, and healing. It also has electrolytes that help regulate your body’s fluid balance, nerve impulses, and muscle contractions.
  3. It has fewer calories than soda or juice. A bottle of vitamin water has around 50 to 120 calories, while soda or juice has around 140 to 200 calories. So, drinking vitamin water instead of pop or fruit juice can help you manage your weight by cutting down on your calorie intake.!

Vitamin water has some disadvantages that outweigh its benefits. Here are some of them:

  1. Added Sugar: Store-bought vitamin water often contains added sugars like fructose or cane sugar, which can lead to health problems like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and tooth decay. A single bottle of vitamin water has 32 grams of sugar, which is slightly less than a soda can or a candy bar.
  2. Artificial Ingredients: Some types of vitamin water brands use artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors, or preservatives to enhance their taste and appearance. However, these components can be harmful to your health. According to Mayo Clinic, some artificial sweeteners may cause headaches, allergic reactions, digestive problems, or even cancer.
  3. Insufficient Hydration or Nutrition: Vitamin water is not a substitute for plain water or a balanced diet. To stay hydrated, it’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you exercise or sweat a lot. Eating foods with balanced nutrients is also crucial for optimal health.!

Instead of drinking sugary or artificially flavored drinks, try making your own infused water by adding fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, or spices to tap water. Infused water is a natural way to add flavor and healthy nutrients to your drink. To make it, simply soak your chosen ingredients in cold water for a few hours or overnight. Here are some reasons why infused water is great:

  1. It helps keep you hydrated, which is important for many aspects of your health, such as regulating body temperature, delivering nutrients to cells, and eliminating waste. Fruits and vegetables are also high in water content, making infused water even more hydrating.!
  2. Drinking infused water is a nutritious way to consume vitamins and minerals from fruits, vegetables, herbs, or spices. The benefits depend on the ingredients you choose. For instance: Lemon water aids digestion, detoxification, skin health, and immunity. Strawberries assist in blood sugar control, inflammation reduction, antioxidant protection, and collagen production. Mint water relieves nausea, reduces bloating, freshens breath, and improves mood. Ginger water can relieve pain, prevent infection, boost metabolism, and reduce inflammation. Cucumbers help with hydration, weight loss, skin health, and kidney function.!
  3. It’s really tasty! You can try different flavors by mixing fruits, vegetables, herbs, or spices to create unique blends. Here are some popular flavor combinations for making infused water, which is healthier than vitamin water: Apple-cinnamon, Grapefruit-rosemary, Orange-lime, Raspberry-lemon-mint, Basil-lemon, Pineapple-coconut, Watermelon-mint, Blueberry-lavender, Peach-ginger & Kiwi-cucumber!

Learn how to easily make your own infused water with just a few ingredients. You will need a large pitcher or jar with a lid, filtered or purified water, fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, or spices of your choice, and a wooden spoon or muddler. Follow these simple steps: wash and chop the ingredients, add them to the pitcher or jar filled with water, mash them with a wooden spoon or muddler, cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight, and enjoy for up to 2 days before discarding any leftovers.!

Here’s how you can make infused water. To make your drink both delicious and nutritious, try these tips:

  • Choose organic produce to avoid harmful chemicals and pesticides.
  • Use cold or room temperature water instead of hot water to retain the nutrients and flavors of the ingredients.
  • Adjust the amount of ingredients to suit your taste; use more for stronger flavors or less for milder ones.
  • Try different combinations of ingredients to discover your preferred flavors.
  • Add ice cubes just before serving for an extra refreshing drink!

The Benefits of Infused Water When I discovered the benefits and drawbacks of vitamin water, I stopped drinking it. I understood that the additional calories, sugar, and artificial additives weren’t worth it. I changed to adding tasty fruits and veggies to simple water as a better option. If you still want to consume vitamin water, go ahead. Limit your intake to one bottle per day or fewer, and wherever feasible, choose sugar-free or low-sugar choices. Just remember not to rely on vitamin water for your hydration or dietary requirements. Replace it with a well-balanced diet and a range of plain and flavoured water.

Or perhaps go to your nearest swanky hotel lobby! 🤣. At the least you will find some water with lemon slices in it.
