Fear and intuition are two distinct psychological states that can be challenging to differentiate. Both are evolutionary responses with significantly different functions in perception and decision-making.

Fear is an emotional response that makes us aware of perceived dangers, or possible harm that is expected. It is often caused by objective or subjective risks that can lead to harm. Generally, fear is a biological evolutionary stimulus that ensures our survival. It leads us to adopt fight or flight responses to cope with the danger appropriately. Fear leaves us feeling anxious and pessimistic about the outcome.
Intuition, on the other hand, entails observing and comprehending something at a deep, inherent level, without express reasoning. It often arises spontaneously and without a significant stimulus. Unlike in fear, there is no immediate threat or danger during a moment of intuition, but an individual may feel like they need to heed the internal warning signals. Intuition usually comes with a good feeling, a sense of positivity about the situation at hand.
To distinguish between the two phenomena, attention needs to be given to their nature and function. Fear is mostly a reaction to a real or perceived threat that requires a practical solution, whereas intuition is more profound, abstract, or a sense of profound knowing that comes out of coherence between our senses and feelings. Additionally, Fear can be gradually alleviated through critical thinking, but intuition needs listening and trusting ourselves.
Ultimately, when one understands the difference between these two phenomena, they can better manage any response mental and emotional responses they may have towards external stimuli.

I wrote a similar blog post in 2017 titled, “Intuition vs. Emotion.” It’s about how making decisions out of emotion can be harmful. And fear is a powerful emotion. Mine is more a sharing of my experience to give hope, and yours is very helpful clinical information to use as a tool. Very good and needed information. Thank you.

Beautiful read, Lori. Your post explains the difference between two mental processes. Emotions are our reactions to external events, while intuition is our ability to understand things without a set outcome. The author gives examples to show how intuition can help in emotional situations, making life easier to handle. It’s a well-written article that’s worth reading.
