It seems sense that we might accidentally start to give up our own pleasure and freedom when we spend the most of our early years trying to figure out how to fit in and make everyone else happy. We pick occupations we believe other people will approve of, we buy clothes that are in style, and we stick with friends or partners simply for the sake of peace. We give in to the demands of others while disregarding and stunting the development of our own selves.
We learn the art of rationalisation and justification in an effort to persuade ourselves that sacrificing some of our enjoyment is worthwhile in order to fit in. Yet the truth is that because they don’t understand your needs the way you do, people will never be able to take the finest care of your life and decisions. You must make a commitment to yourself and your needs if you want to start living for yourself and no longer being controlled by other people’s expectations. Knowing that others might not agree with or understand, you must allow yourself the flexibility to pursue your interests. You don’t have to think of freedom as a nebulous or unreachable ideal. Real freedom comes from identifying and then achieving your own expectations. It is the skill of allowing your true self to freely express itself while understanding that only you are capable of making the best decisions for your life.
Everyone of us is born into a world with unique circumstances and genetic makeup. Some people were created to help others. Some people are natural artists. The desire to do something was ingrained in you from birth. Do not let your motivation lapse. Finding what gives you meaning and pursuing it with commitment and rigour are the goals here rather than pursuing wealth, fame, or power.
“I tell you that you’ll be incredibly unhappy for the rest of your life if you actively aim to be less than you are capable of being. You’ll be avoiding your own potential and capabilities. Muhammad Maslow
