Why your 8 AM is already ruining everything and nobody tells you how to fix it

I really appreciate you checking out my blog! Just so you know, some of the links in this post are affiliate links. This means that if you buy something through them, I might earn a little bit of money, at no extra cost to you. There’s absolutely no pressure to buy anything, but if you do, it genuinely helps support the time and love I put into writing these posts.

Okay so I used to wake up at like 6:47. Exactly that. Not on purpose. My alarm would go off and I’d just. Panic. Like full-body panic before my feet even hit the ground.

Stumbling into the bathroom. Phone in hand. Scrolling emails while my coffee is simultaneously cold AND somehow still burning my tongue, which—how does that even happen? And I’d get to work and just. Feel defeated. Before anyone even said good morning.

Then one day I was like… okay this is insane. I’m sabotaging myself before work even starts.

But here’s the thing. I didn’t fix it with like meditation or some whole morning routine manifesto bullshit. You know the type. 5 AM wake-up, cold shower, gratitude journal, green juice. I hate that stuff. It just stresses me out more.

It was smaller than that. Weird, actually. Like I had to remove the friction. The tiny stuff that was making me feel out of control before 9 AM.

The Real Stuff Nobody Talks About

Your phone dying at 8:47 AM. Your Bluetooth just… not connecting. Standing there looking stupid. Your coffee getting cold because you’re standing at the counter scrolling Reddit or whatever and suddenly it’s lukewarm and sad.

The shower being dark so you use conditioner on your face (okay that’s specifically me but I KNOW other people do this too don’t lie).

These aren’t big problems. They’re small. But they like… stack on top of each other? And by the time you’re at your desk you’re already defeated and it’s not even 8:30.

So I like… actually fixed it. Not in some Instagram way. Just. Pragmatically.

Thing One: Your Phone Battery Is Making You Anxious And You Don’t Even Realize It

I got an Anker portable charger, the 20W one, whatever, doesn’t matter which, and threw it in my bag. Sounds stupid simple but like. That background anxiety? The constant watching your battery percentage drop? Gone.

You get on the train. You don’t have to ration your phone use like you’re on a sinking ship. You can just. Use it. If you want.

The mental space that frees up is legitimately shocking. I know that sounds dramatic but it’s true. You’re not doing math in your head about whether you have enough juice to get through your commute plus work plus evening. You just… exist.

That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

Thing Two: Your Shower Is Supposed to Be Good Actually

I bought a JBL Flip speaker, waterproof, $120 or whatever, and started actually enjoying my shower instead of treating it like a chore.

Like here’s the thing. You’re alone in there. No one’s bugging you. It’s the one time you’re genuinely unavailable. So why are we speed-running through it like we’re being timed?

I started listening to podcasts. Or a playlist that actually hits. Sometimes just nothing and my own thoughts, which is apparently radical.

When you’re listening to something good, you’re not in your head spiraling about your to-do list. You’re not thinking about that email. You’re just… there. Your shower stops being “I have to shower” and becomes like. An actual part of your day you look forward to.

And that mood? You carry it with you.

Thing Three: Your Desk Light Situation Is Sabotaging You And Again You Don’t Know It

So I got a bright LED desk lamp (doesn’t matter which, like a TaoTronics or whatever, $35) and my entire morning shifted.

Bad lighting makes everything harder. Like neurologically harder. Your brain is like “it’s dark, we’re in danger, let’s panic.”

Good lighting? Your brain goes “oh. Oh okay. We’re actually awake. Interesting.”

It’s dumb but it’s real.

Okay But Also the Night Before Thing

Because mornings don’t actually start in the morning, right? They start the night before.

I charge my phone. Not like “oh I’ll top it up at 7 AM while I’m getting ready.” Full charge. The night before. Coffee on a timer if I have one. Clothes picked out so I’m not standing in front of my closet having an identity crisis.

None of this is revolutionary or hard. It’s just like. Actually thinking about the next morning instead of winging it.

Then I wake up and I move slowly. Not like meditation-slow. Just not immediately in crisis mode.

Shower. Listen to something. Get to my desk. The light is good. My phone isn’t dying. I have like… margin? Mental margin? And suddenly I can actually think about what I’m doing instead of just white-knuckling through it.

Everything hits different when you’re not starting the day already exhausted.

Why I’m Actually Telling You This

Because I lived like this for so long. Waking up already defeated. Showing up to work already behind. And the only person who could fix it was me.

And the fix was stupid simple. Just intention. Small stuff.

But here’s what happened after: I got clearer on everything. Like what I actually want. From my job. My relationships. Why I keep making the same mistakes. Everything got quieter and that made everything else louder.

The things that actually matter became obvious.

So Like. Here’s the Thing

I write about this stuff all the time at my Substack, Love, Unlearned. The patterns we’re stuck in. Why we sabotage ourselves. The habits that are running our entire lives and we don’t even know it.

It’s not just about mornings. It’s about the fact that you’re reading this because something needs to change. And you know it.

So change it. Start small. Get the things that remove friction. Make your morning something you’re not hating before 7 AM.

Come talk to me about it. Like actually. I want to know what’s killing your morning. What’s the thing that makes you feel defeated before work?

Reply. Tell me. I’m reading.
