A completely unhinged guide to herbs for people who usually just drink coffee and pretend that counts as self-care

A quick note from me: I really appreciate you checking out my blog! Just so you know, some of the links in this post are affiliate links. This means that if you buy something through them, I might earn a little bit of money, at no extra cost to you. There’s absolutely no pressure to buy anything, but if you do, it genuinely helps support the time and love I put into writing these posts.

So here’s what happened. I was having a genuinely shit week. Like the kind where you’re snapping at people for no reason and your chest feels tight and you can’t sleep but you’re also exhausted and you just kind of want to scream into a pillow. You know that week? Yeah. That one.

I was scrolling through Amazon at like midnight—which is never a good sign, my therapist would say, and I just typed “dried herbs” into the search bar. Not even sure why. And suddenly there’s like a thousand options. A thousand options for dead plants I could buy for five dollars.

I got a mesh tea strainer first. Just a basic one. Like five bucks. Nothing fancy. And some loose chamomile because I’d heard it was supposed to be calming or whatever. And honestly? I bought it expecting nothing. I was like “this is going to be hippie bullshit and I’m going to feel stupid.”

But I made the tea and I sat with it for like fifteen minutes and I actually felt less insane. Like actually. My shoulders weren’t up by my ears anymore. I wasn’t thinking about all the shit I forgot to do that day.

And that was it. I was hooked.

Next thing I know I’m buying those little glass jars. The kind with the labels. I felt insane doing it. Like who am I? I’m not the type of person who has organized herbs. I’m the person who has three half-empty bottles of hot sauce in the back of my fridge and calls it cooking. But I did it anyway.

I got peppermint. Ginger. Some lemon balm because the description sounded nice. Just ordered them individually because I’m not paying thirty dollars for some “starter kit.” I’m a grown adult with impulse control issues, not an idiot.

The peppermint thing is wild because my stomach is apparently a nightmare and I never knew it. Like I’d just accepted that after lunch I’d feel bloated and weird and that was just my body’s personality. But peppermint tea? That shit actually works. I’d drink it and like twenty minutes later I could breathe again. Which is embarrassing that I didn’t know that about myself but also kind of wild that it’s that simple.

So I started making these combinations. Like I’d wake up feeling anxious and I’d throw chamomile and some lavender in a cup. On days when I felt like absolute garbage I’d do peppermint and ginger. I wasn’t following anyone’s rules. I just kept experimenting until something made me feel less like I was going to vibrate out of my skin.

My coworker noticed first. She was like “why do you always have that little cup?” And I was like “herbs.” And she gave me that look. You know the look. The “oh so you’re one of THOSE people now” look. And I didn’t even defend myself because yeah. I guess I am one of those people now. Whatever.

Here’s the thing though. It’s not magic. I’m not cured. I still have anxiety. I still have bad days. I still stress eat and stay up too late and make poor decisions. But on the days when I actually stop for five minutes and make myself a cup of something that tastes good? I feel like I can think. Like my brain isn’t completely hijacked by panic.

And that’s the wildest part. It’s not even about the plants necessarily. It’s about stopping. It’s about doing something for yourself that takes like eight minutes. We don’t do that anymore. We just power through everything. We’re all just grinding and grinding and grinding and then wondering why we feel like shit.

I genuinely think the ritual is doing more than the actual herbs. Like the act of making it. Waiting for the water to heat up. Actually tasting something instead of just consuming it. Not checking my phone for like ten minutes. That alone probably fixes half of my problems. But also like, the ginger does actually help my digestion so both things can be true.

I’ve spent probably like seventy bucks total on herbs now. Which is less than I used to spend on coffee in a month so like, I’m actually saving money. That’s the excuse I use anyway. But honestly it’s become something I look forward to. Which is sad in a way? That I’m excited about drinking hot plants? But it’s also not sad because at least I’m excited about something.

My mom thinks I’m weird. My boyfriend thinks it’s funny. My friends started asking me about it which was shocking because I assumed everyone would judge me harder than they did. But apparently people are just out here suffering and they don’t realize there are other options. They think you either suffer or you take pills or you just accept it as your baseline. Nobody told them you could just… try something.

I’m not saying this is going to change your life. I’m not saying you’re going to become one of those people with a herb garden and a whole aesthetic. Maybe you will, maybe you won’t. But I am saying that for like forty bucks you can buy a mesh strainer and like five different herbs and just see what happens. You can try peppermint and see if your stomach feels better. You can try chamomile and see if you sleep. You can try lavender and see if it’s actually relaxing or if it’s just expensive perfume.

And then like. Tell me what happens. Not because I need validation or whatever. But because I genuinely want to know if this is actually helping you or if I’m just a weirdo who found a placebo and built a whole personality around it. I write about this stuff because it’s real and it’s honest and it’s not some bullshit wellness hustle. It’s just plants and your actual body and what happens when you stop ignoring both of those things.

So try it. Order the strainer. Get like three herbs you’ve never tried. Make some tea. Notice if anything shifts. And then come tell me about it in the comments or subscribe or whatever because I genuinely like talking to people who are actually paying attention to their own lives instead of just existing on autopilot.

That’s it. That’s the post. Go buy some dried plants and see what happens.
