The wellness industry missed a $3 billion detail

I really appreciate you checking out my blog! Just so you know, some of the links in this post are affiliate links. This means that if you buy something through them, I might earn a little bit of money, at no extra cost to you. There’s absolutely no pressure to buy anything, but if you do, it genuinely helps support the time and love I put into writing these posts.
Look, I used to be that person. Spending $200 a month on collagen powder and digestive enzymes and probiotics with names that sound like experimental aircraft. I’d stand in front of my refrigerator at 6 AM with my little probiotic bottle thinking I was doing everything right.
Then my doctor said something that broke my brain: “You’re feeding the supplements, not your gut bacteria.”
Yeah.
Here’s what nobody tells you. The entire gut health industry, billions of dollars—has convinced us that healing our guts requires third-party tested powders and subscription boxes and probiotics that cost more than your monthly coffee budget. Meanwhile, the thing your gut bacteria actually want is literally sitting in your cabinet collecting dust.
Spices.
Not sexy. Not marketable. Not something you can charge $79 a month for. Just spices. The stuff your grandmother threw into everything without overthinking it.
I noticed something weird when I paid attention to what actually shifted my digestion. It wasn’t the expensive probiotic. It was when I started making actual food again. Real food with real flavors. And specifically, real spices.
Turmeric started this. I was doing the whole anti-inflammatory thing (because of course I was), but I was taking it as a supplement. Clinical. Bitter. Like medicine. Then one day I made actual golden milk, turmeric, ginger, black pepper, milk, honey, and my body suddenly understood what I was trying to do. Your body recognizes food. It KNOWS food. Supplements are like speaking to someone in a language they barely understand. Food is different.
The thing about spices the supplement industry will never tell you: they feed your good gut bacteria. They’re prebiotic. Anti-inflammatory. They’re antimicrobial without nuking all your healthy bacteria like antibiotics do. They’re basically what your microbiome has been waiting for.
So I went all in. Stupid all in.
First thing that changed everything: I got a burr grinder. Not fancy. Just a basic electric burr grinder from Amazon (like $25-35). Pre-ground spices lose potency stupid fast. Your grocery store turmeric? Gold-colored sawdust. When you grind your own, you get the actual compounds. The actual medicine. This matters. This is the difference between taking a supplement and actually using food as medicine.
Then I switched where I bought my spices. Specifically turmeric and black pepper. I stopped going to the random supermarket bottles and started buying Frontier or Simply Organic brands, you can get them on Amazon, way cheaper at Vitacost, or honestly at Whole Foods if you’re near one. Here’s why: black pepper isn’t just flavor. It has piperine, which literally makes your body absorb turmeric better. Exponentially better. Scientists have proven this. It’s how your ancestors figured out food combinations worked. This is free knowledge and people charge $200 a month to not tell you this.
Then storage: I realized I was storing my fresh-ground spices in regular containers exposed to light and air and they were just dying. Slowly oxidizing into nothing. So I grabbed some basic glass spice jars with airtight seals from Amazon (like $15-20 for a set). Suddenly my spices tasted like actual spices. It sounds ridiculous until you realize you’ve been eating shadows of spices your entire life and wondering why nothing tastes good.
Once I started actually using spices, not taking them as supplements, using them to cook, things shifted. Fast. Like two weeks fast. My digestion was different. My energy was different. I stopped craving weird stuff and started wanting actual food.
But here’s what nobody wants to admit: it’s not just the spices. It’s that you’re paying attention to what you’re putting in your body. It’s that your body recognizes food as communication. It’s the ritual of grinding spices and being like, “Okay, I’m actually taking care of myself today.” That matters more than anyone says it does.
The wellness industry wants you broken so you keep buying. Your gut just wants you to season your food like a normal human.
I’ve watched people realize this. Watched them go from $300 a month on supplements to $30 on actual spices and suddenly feeling better. The science is solid, turmeric, ginger, cumin, cinnamon, black pepper, fennel, all anti-inflammatory, all prebiotic. But you have to actually cook with them. Make them part of your actual life. Not take them as a capsule at 6 AM and forget about it.
Here’s what kills me: we made healing complicated because complicated sells. But what if the missing piece wasn’t something you needed to buy, but something you’ve been ignoring the whole time?
If this lands, if you’re tired of the supplement cycle and wondering if there’s another way, I write about this constantly. How to actually fix your gut. How to stop trusting marketing and start trusting your body. How to feel better without emptying your bank account on things that don’t work.
