Spoiler: It’s not the medication

A quick note from me: I really appreciate you checking out my blog! Just so you know, some of the links in this post are affiliate links. This means that if you buy something through them, I might earn a little bit of money, at no extra cost to you. There’s absolutely no pressure to buy anything, but if you do, it genuinely helps support the time and love I put into writing these posts.
Maya looked at me and said this thing I can’t stop thinking about: “I’m on my thyroid medication. Why do I still feel like garbage?”
I didn’t have an answer. Not immediately. And I hate that about healthcare, people get told “your numbers are fine” and then they’re supposed to just… accept feeling bad. Like that’s the deal now.
She asked me point-blank: “Is this just how it is?”
No. Actually. It’s probably not.
Here’s what I realized talking to people about this stuff: everyone’s obsessed with TSH. Get that number right and you’re supposedly fixed. But nobody talks about the part that actually matters, the part where your body has to convert the medication into something it can use. And your body needs something to do that conversion. Something most people have never heard of.
Selenium.
Yeah. I know. You’re rolling your eyes. Another mineral. Another supplement. Another thing to feel bad about not taking. But hear me out because this is genuinely wild.
Your thyroid needs selenium more than your heart needs it. More than your brain. More than literally any other organ. And most people? Deficient. They don’t know it. Their doctors don’t check for it. So they take medication that their body can’t actually use properly because they’re missing one ingredient.
It’s like showing up to a recipe with everything except salt. The dish doesn’t work. But nobody asks if you have salt. They just assume you’re a bad cook.
I don’t know why this isn’t common knowledge. I actually don’t. It should be. It’s not trendy enough. It’s not expensive enough for luxury supplement brands to care. It’s just… boring and necessary. And we’ve collectively decided boring stuff doesn’t matter.
But it does.
You need maybe 100-200 micrograms a day. That’s nothing. Literally nothing. But if you’re not getting it, and statistically you’re probably not, then your thyroid medication is basically sitting in your body like an unopened Amazon box. It’s there. It looks official. It’s doing absolutely nothing.
I talked to Jordan. He’s been on thyroid meds for three years. Feels 40% better. He asked me: “Is this as good as it gets?” And I had to ask him: “Has anyone ever checked if you have enough selenium?”
He looked at me like I’d just spoken a dead language.
That’s the gap. That’s the thing nobody’s talking about.
So here’s what people actually buy because they’re tired and they want to try this:
Nutricost Selenium (200 mcg, like $8 on Amazon, people actually stick with this one). It’s not fancy. It has no story. It works. No “bioavailable” marketing bullshit. Just selenium. You take it. Done.
And honestly? That might be enough.
Some people also layer it into their existing multivitamin routine instead of adding another pill. Because let’s be real, most of us are already maxed out on remembering to take stuff.
But the point isn’t what brand you buy. The point is: what if you’re not broken? What if your medication’s not broken? What if your body just needs one thing you’ve never heard of?
I don’t have proof this will fix you. I’m not going to pretend I do. But I’ve talked to enough people who tried this and went “wait, I feel… different” that I can’t not mention it. Not in a “this is medical advice” way. In a “this is something literally nobody talks about and it might matter” way.
Here’s what I actually want from you though:
Don’t just read this and forget it in five minutes. Actually engage with it. Tell me if this landed. Tell me if your doctor’s ever mentioned selenium. Tell me if you’re skeptical, you probably should be. Tell me if you tried it and felt something shift, even if it’s small.
I write this stuff because the people who respond are the ones who actually change. The ones who move from knowing something to doing it. That gap between knowledge and action? That’s where the real stuff happens.
So are you going to try this? Or are you going to scroll past and keep running on 40%?
