The Unexpected Amazon Fixes That Actually Let Your Spouse Stop Earplugs & Start Relationships

A quick note from me: I really appreciate you checking out my blog! Just so you know, some of the links in this post are affiliate links. This means that if you buy something through them, I might earn a little bit of money, at no extra cost to you. There’s absolutely no pressure to buy anything, but if you do, it genuinely helps support the time and love I put into writing these posts.
So like, I was being a complete asshole about the snoring thing. My partner just… moved to the couch one night. Didn’t even make it dramatic. Just grabbed a pillow and left. And I remember lying there thinking “okay this is fine, whatever” except it wasn’t fine. It was catastrophic. It was “our relationship is ending and I’m choosing to stay asleep through it” energy.
Which is insane when you actually think about it.
Why would you just let someone leave your bed? Because you sound like a broken leaf blower? I don’t know man. I was lazy. Probably embarrassed too. Definitely in denial about whether it was even a real problem or just something people complained about to seem relatable.
But then I realized, no. This was real. And fixable. And I was being a selfish idiot about the whole thing.
So I started looking. Amazon hole, right? You know how that goes. You search “stop snoring” at 11 PM and suddenly it’s 2 AM and you’re reading Reddit threads from people whose marriages actually ended over this and you’re like “okay I need to get serious or I’m sleeping alone forever.”
And here’s what’s wild: there are actually stupid-easy solutions. Like, cheaper-than-a-decent-coffee solutions. The kind of thing where you spend thirty, forty bucks total and suddenly your partner doesn’t hate you. Revolutionary.
Nasal strips first. Breathe Right. Yeah they look ridiculous. You look like you’re auditioning for a CW show from 2003. You look absurd. I mean genuinely stupid. But like… they work. That same night. I put them on thinking this is placebo bullshit and woke up and my partner was actually sleeping next to me instead of plotting her escape. One night. Eight bucks.
I was shocked. Like legitimately shook. I thought this would take weeks of whatever. Nope. That night she was like “oh my god what did you do?” and I’m standing there like a dork with these tiny scaffolding things on my face like yeah, apparently I’m willing to look like an idiot if you don’t leave me.
The thing is they’re so simple that you almost don’t believe they work. You’re like “this can’t be it, it’s too easy, I must be missing something.” But no. Your airways just collapse when you sleep flat on your back, and the strips literally just hold them open. Physics. Not magic.
Then I found out humidifiers exist. Which sounds dumb because obviously humidifiers exist but like, I never connected the dots? Our bedroom is basically a desert in the winter. I’m sleeping in there with the humidity of Arizona. Your throat gets angry. Your body gets angry. Everything swells up and then you’re basically snoring because your airways are genuinely mad at you.
Stuck a little ultrasonic one from Amazon, thirty bucks, looks like a tiny UFO sitting on the nightstand, kinda cute actually, and like, it’s not magic or anything. But it’s quieter. Noticeably quieter. The kind of quieter where someone doesn’t immediately consider filing for divorce or at minimum doesn’t fantasize about headphones loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage.
What surprised me was how different the snoring sounded after like, three nights of the humidifier running. It got softer. Less aggressive. Less “chainsaw at 2 AM” and more “okay that’s annoying but I could theoretically sleep through it.” That’s the sweet spot. That’s when people stop leaving.
And then, this is the one that actually felt a little weird, I bought a wedge pillow. I resisted this forever because it looked uncomfortable. It looked like something your grandpa would buy because his back hurt. But the science is actually stupid simple: when you’re flat on your back, everything falls backward. Your tongue. Your soft palate. All of it. It collapses into your airway like you’re actively trying to block your own breathing.
A wedge pillow is just… angled, right? You’re not sitting up. You’re just tilted. Like thirty degrees. Your upper body is just slightly elevated.
And it’s wild how much that matters. The first night I used it I slept like a weirdo but my partner actually stayed in bed. She stayed. That’s the whole metric. Does she stay or does she leave? That’s the only thing that matters.
The difference with the wedge is it’s not just helping the snoring, it’s changing your whole positioning. You can’t roll onto your back as easily when you’re on an incline. You naturally stay more on your side. Your airways have better geometry. Everything just… works better.
Together these three things are like, not expensive. We’re talking maybe forty, fifty bucks if you’re buying decent versions. The strips are basically nothing. The humidifier is reasonable. The wedge pillow, I got one that was like thirty-five dollars and it’s fine. It’s not luxury. It’s functional. And it actually works.
Here’s the thing though: you’re not trying to become silent. You’re not going to buy these and suddenly sound like you’re not even in the room. That’s not real. But you’re going to become tolerable. You’re going to move from “I’m sleeping elsewhere now” territory into “okay I can actually sleep next to you” territory.
And that’s everything.
I was watching my relationship implode over something that literally costs less than a dinner out. Over something fixable. Over something I could have addressed instead of just… accepting that my partner needed earplugs or a separate room.
It’s kind of embarrassing actually. How easy it was. How I was just like “I guess this is life now” instead of spending five minutes on Amazon.
The wedge pillow especially surprised me because I expected it to feel weird for like a month. Nope. Two nights and you forget you’re even on an incline. Your body’s just like “oh this is better” and moves on.
Real talk though: if you’re in that phase where your partner’s starting to pull away, where you can see it happening in their eyes, where they’re like “we need to fix this or I can’t do this anymore” this is the moment. This is the week you actually try something. Not next month. Not when you lose weight or whatever. Now. Order the strips today. Set up the humidifier tonight. Grab the wedge pillow this week.
Because the person next to you is losing sleep. And they’re losing patience. And they’re starting to wonder if this is just how it’s always going to be.
It doesn’t have to be.
I write about this stuff deeper, the real uncomfortable conversations, the relationship moments nobody talks about, the practical solutions that actually work, every week on my Substack. Love, Unlearned. It’s where I’m honest about the stuff that matters. About showing up for people instead of just accepting that things are broken.
Come subscribe if you want that. You deserve better sleep. Your partner deserves to actually stay in your bed.
That’s not asking too much.
